What to bring: Just yourself and your lunch, if desired.
Vice President for Research, Duncan Brown, and the Office of Research staff will host a Research and Creative Fall Social on Friday, March 22 from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. in Lyman Hall’s first floor lobby.
This social offers faculty, staff, and postdocs space to take an afternoon away from their research and creative activities and enjoy a beverage, light appetizers, and social time with friends and colleagues.
The Office of Research’s Research and Creative Socials are come-and-go events, with no obligation to stay the whole time.
Host: Jeremy Steinbacher, Director of Operations of the BioInspired Institute
Description: Insider knowledge of how universities function will give you a leg up in higher education faculty or staff job searches. However, despite their seemingly simple mission to educate post-secondary students, universities are surprisingly complex and inscrutable organizations. They have obligations to a huge array of stakeholders in addition to the administrative challenges faced by any large organization operating today. In this discussion, former faculty member Dr. Steinbacher will bring his experience on a faculty senate and a college budget committee to shed light on how universities bring in funds, what they spend it on, and some of the unique challenges faced by institutions of higher education.

Host: Linda Ivany, Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences
Description: Mentors at every stage are critical for success in higher education and postdocs serve an important role mentoring graduate and undergraduate students. Throughout their academic careers, postdocs themselves have experienced various mentor relationships – but are they actively thinking about how to mentor others effectively? Celebrated mentor to undergraduate students, Dr. Ivany will lead a conversation on mentoring and suggest some tools for how postdocs can be successful models and leaders.
What to bring: Something to take notes and your lunch!
Host: Stephanie Michaels, Assistant Director of the Office of Research Integrity and Protections (ORIP)
Description: Our decision-making capabilities can shrink when we are stressed or under pressure – and postdocs are under a lot of pressure. Due to the survival reactions of our stress response, we may be more likely to make decisions we could regret later. In this workshop we will learn techniques to subdue the physical and mental reactions of stress and learn strategies to turn distress into eustress to enhance our motivation and problem-solving skills.
